CONCEALED WEAPON PERMIT APPLICATION PROCESS

To download forms, scroll down to select which permit you wish to apply for or renew- a regular Concealed Weapon Permit (CWP) or the Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit
(ECWP). Below the instructions/ information is the appropriate form that need to be filled out, select the form, it will download to your computer. You can fill in the form on your computer and print it out OR print it out and fill it in by hand. DO NOT SIGN THE FORM UNTIL YOU DROP IT OFF AT THE GALLATIN COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER.

Please include PHOTOCOPIES of your documents, original documents will not be returned to you and we cannot make photocopies for you.

At this time, we do not have the ability to take your payment online, nor can we take credit or debit cards. If you are paying with cash, please have the EXACT PAYMENT AMOUNT, WE DO NOT HAVE CHANGE.

Completed forms with the necessary documentation can be dropped off at the Gallatin County Justice Center Security Checkpoint between 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Once we receive your paperwork, it takes about 6-8 weeks to conduct a background check. We will deposit your checks when we do your background check. Once your application has been processed and approved, we will contact you by the email address or the circled phone number listed on your form to come to the Gallatin County Justice Center to pick up your card. If you are a new applicant, a photo will be taken at this time.
BOTH permits (Regular and Enhanced) will be valid for five (5) years. We do not send out reminders to renew, it’s the permit holder’s responsibility to remember when to renew.

NEW APPLICATIONS - REGULAR CWP

A regular Concealed Weapon Permit can be used for the purchase of firearms as well as having reciprocity with other States.
Use this Regular New Application form for: new CWP applications, CWP renewals from other counties/states, OR if your regular permit has been expired for more than 30 days.
To get a Concealed Weapon Permit, you must be a US citizen or permanent lawful resident, 18 years of age or older, a resident of the state of Montana for at least 6 months and have a current physical address in Gallatin County.

You will need to provide:

  • A PHOTOCOPY of your Montana Driver’s License. Do not provide the original license.
  • If your Driver’s License shows an out-of-county address, you will need to provide proof of residency in Gallatin County, such as a copy of mortgage on address, power bill, rental agreement, etc.
  • A PHOTOCOPY of your certification – Gun safety class, DD214, or Hunter Safety certificate. Do not provide the original certification.
    A list of approved firearm instructors that offer gun safety courses meeting the requirements for MCA 45-8-321 is attached above. The only online course that is accepted is through Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
  • Payment of cash or check of $50

NEW APPLICATIONS - ENHANCED CWP

An Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit (ECWP) has the same benefits as a regular CWP (for the purchase of firearms as well as having reciprocity with other States) HOWEVER it should be recognized by an additional five (5) states for reciprocity: Delaware, Minnesota, New Mexico, South Carolina and Washington State.

Use this Enhanced New Application form for: New Enhanced CWP applications, Enhanced CWP renewals from other counties/states, OR if your Enhanced permit has been expired for more than 30 days.

To get a Concealed Weapon Permit, you must be a US citizen or permanent lawful resident, 18 years of age or older, a resident of the state of Montana for at least 6 months and have a current physical address in Gallatin County.

You will need to provide:

  • A PHOTOCOPY of your Montana Driver’s License. Do not provide the original license.

  • A PHOTOCOPY of your qualifying handgun certification (dated within 12 months of application). The requirements of a qualifying handgun course is specified in MCA 45-8-312 (5) and stipulates live fire training including the firing of at least 98 rounds of ammunition by the student. Do not provide the original certification.
  • A list of approved firearm instructors that offer qualifying gun safety courses meeting the requirements for MCA 45-8-312 is attached above.

NEW ENHANCED CWP APPLICATION FORM (PRINT/DOWNLOAD)

REGULAR CWP RENEWALS

Use THIS Renewal form if you are a CURRENT Gallatin County regular Concealed Weapon Permit (CWP) holder.

Your renewal period runs 90 days prior to expiration to 30 days after expiration. If your permit is more than 30 days expired, you will need to fill out the longer New regular CWP application form.

You will need to provide:

  • A PHOTOCOPY of your Montana Driver’s License. Do not provide the original license.
  • A PHOTOCOPY of your current/recently expired Concealed Weapon Permit card showing BOTH SIDES. Do not provide the original permit. You do NOT need to retake a gun safety course for the renewal of a regular concealed weapon permit.
  • Payment of cash or check for $25.00 (exact payment as we don’t have change) UNLESS your permit is expired more than 30 days, then payment will be $50.00

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE CURRENT LAW REGARDING THE CARRYING OF A CONCEALED FIREARM?

Montana law allows any person to conceal carry a weapon without a concealed weapon permit, so long as that person is eligible to possess a firearm under state or federal law. M.C.A. Sections 45-8-321 and M.C.A 45-8-312 are specific to the Regular and the Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permits with following sections covering the laws related to concealed weapons. Most citizens find that their specific needs for protection in the home, business or while traveling fall within the current law without needing a permit.

An applicant for either the Regular or the Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit must be:

  • US Citizen or permanent lawful resident
  • 18 years of age or older
  • A Montana resident for at least 6 months
  • The holder of a valid Montana driver’s license

Applicants for an Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit that are over 18 years of age but not yet 21 years of age that meet the requirements and qualifications for the Enhanced permit will be issued a “Temporary Restricted Enhanced” Concealed Weapon Permit. An individual holding an unexpired Restricted Enhanced Permit upon reaching 21 years of age can submit a written request to the Sheriff for an unrestricted Enhanced permit which will be issued at no additional cost.
M.C.A 45-8-321 covers the permitting process for the regular Concealed Weapon Permit and M.C.A 45-8-312 covers the process for the Enhanced Concealed Weapon permit.

Anyone who wishes to carry a concealed pistol, revolver, or any other firearm capable of being concealed upon a person is eligible to apply, subject to the criteria listed in M.C.A 45- 8-312 and M.C.A. 45-8-321.

Pursuant to the authority granted in M.C.A. Section 45-8-321, the sheriff of a county may issue written permits for carrying concealed weapons. Permits must be obtained in the county of permanent residence.

Regular and Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permits are honored everywhere in Montana. For out-of-state validity, you must contact the Attorney General of the states in which you plan to travel to see if they will honor either of Montana’s concealed weapon permits.

It is illegal for a person to carry a concealed weapon into:

  • a courtroom or space controlled by a Montana court, unless otherwise ordered by the Judge in charge of that court.
  • a Montana public school, unless otherwise ordered by the school board in charge of that public school.
  • a federal office or building.
  • any County building, unless authorized to do so by the Sheriff

If your new address is still in Gallatin County you can fill out the “Card Reprint” form at the top of this web page. The fee is $10, present the completed form and fee to Security at the Gallatin County Justice Center (515 S 16th Ave), they will update your information and print you out a new card. Be aware that for firearm purchases the address on your Montana driver’s license needs to match the address on your concealed weapon permit card (CWP or ECWP). If you have moved out of Gallatin County or out of Montana, you will need to contact your local law enforcement agency to get a permit from them.

The ENHANCED concealed weapon permit has all the benefits of a regular Concealed Weapon permit (for purchasing firearms as well as reciprocity with other states) however it SHOULD be recognized for reciprocity by five (5) additional states: Delaware, Minnesota, New Mexico, South Carolina and Washington State.

The ENHANCED concealed weapon permit requires fingerprinting for an increased background check as well as the completion of a qualifying handgun course that includes live fire training within 12 months of application. (M.C.A 45-8-312)

No, you can’t. The requirements for a regular Concealed Weapon Permit do not meet the requirements specified for an Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit. 

MCA 45-8-312 is the Montana statute that applies to Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permits and section 5 states: “A qualifying handgun course is any handgun course approved by a law enforcement agency that includes instruction in each of the following: 

  • laws relating to firearms and the use of force;
  • the basic concepts of the safe and responsible use of handguns;
  • self-defense principles; and
  • live fire training, including the firing of at least 98 rounds of ammunition by the student.

Our Approved Firearm Instructor list has been updated to show which instructors/ businesses offer gun safety courses that meet the qualifications for the regular Concealed Weapon Permit (CWP) as well as the Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit (ECWP). This list can be found near the top of this web page under the General Instructions Section.

Unlike the regular Concealed Weapon Permit renewal requirements, to renew an Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit a qualifying handgun safety course must be taken within 12 months prior to renewal. The certification used for the initial Enhanced CWP application cannot be re-used, the course must be re-taken.

The Gallatin County Detention Center (605 S 16th Ave, Bozeman) offers fingerprinting by appointment. There is a link to schedule fingerprint appointments in the upper left menu at the top of this web page under “SCHEDULE FINGERPRINTING” or you can make an appointment through the link at the bottom of the Detention Center’s webpage at gallatincountysheriff.com/detention-center. The fingerprinting fee for an Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit is $45.00. 

No, fingerprinting cannot be re-used or re-purposed. The fingerprinting required for the increased background check MUST be done specifically for the purpose of obtaining an Enhanced Concealed Weapon Permit. The fingerprinting system at the Gallatin County Detention Center has been updated by the FBI in order the run the required increased background check. Fingerprints from other locations or for other purposes will not be accepted.

  • Initial cost for a Regular CWP is $50, nonrefundable. Renewal cost is $25, nonrefundable.
  • CASH OR CHECK ONLY. Make checks payable to GCSO or Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office
  • Valid for five (5) years, but it can be revoked at any time. (M.C.A 45-8-323)
  • Applicant is responsible for the costs of handgun safety course.
  • Initial cost for an Enhanced CWP is $75, nonrefundable. Renewal cost is $50, nonrefundable.

M.C.A 45-8-322 covers the application, renewal, permit, and fees for a regular Concealed Weapon Permit, M.C.A. 45-8-321 covers Enhanced Concealed Weapon permits.

Please do not call to check on the status of your permit unless it’s been over eight (8) weeks. We have many applications and renewals as well as the increased background check requirements for the Enhanced concealed weapon permit so it can take up to eight weeks to get an application processed and approved.

If you are checking on a status as it’s been over eight weeks and you provided an email address on your application form, please double check your spam/junk folder as you may have received an email advising that your permit is ready to be picked up but it didn’t go to your email’s inbox.

TRAINING

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office has one Captain and one Sergeant overseeing all aspects of the Office training needs. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining training certifications, providing in-house training, overseeing the Field Training Evaluation Program, and sending newly hired deputies to the Montana Law Enforcement Academy.

Newly hired deputies are put through six weeks of onboarding and pre-service training prior to the Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP). The FTEP program is approximately twenty weeks in length. New deputies will then complete a twelve-week course at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy to receive their Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certificate.

The Training Division also coordinates trainings with outside instructors that are available to Montana Law Enforcement. Information regarding any upcoming trainings will be listed below as they become available.

CHAPLAIN

Chaplain Jones has been a chaplain with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office for nine years and became the full-time lead chaplain in January of 2017. He is also a member of our county’s critical incident stress management (CISM) team, serves as a volunteer firefighter and EMT, and is on the board of the Montana chapter of Concerns for Police Survivors (MT COPS). Prior to becoming a chaplain, Chaplain Jones served nine years as a pastor and before that, 15 years as a missionary in Africa. Randy and his wife have been married for 37 years and the Lord has blessed us with five children and five grandchildren.

WARREN HIEBERT

CHAPLAIN

Chaplain Hiebert started serving the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office July 19th, 1990. He was the first chaplain with the GCSO and has served for 34 years. Presently, with the blessing of Sheriff Springer, he also now serves the Montana Sheriff’s and Peace Officers Association as chairman of the Montana Law Enforcement Chaplains. Chaplain Hiebert is also the state representative for the International Conference of Police Chaplains. He helps train, mentor, and start chaplain’s programs around the state of Montana.

DALE FRICKE

CHAPLAIN

Chaplain Fricke has been a chaplain with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office for three years. He has been serving as the Assistant Pastor of Calvary Chapel Bozeman for 18 years, and as a reserve officer with the Hot Springs Police Department for three years. Prior to moving to Montana, Chaplain Fricke served as a volunteer deputy with Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona for six years and was the senior agency chaplain.

MARK HAROLD

CHAPLAIN

Chaplain Harold has been a part-time law enforcement chaplain with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office since 2022. He also volunteers with the Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue and operates the GCSO Command Vehicle (6CV). Mark currently manages the ranch where is wife was raised and has works as a security guard for a local security company since 2002. Chaplain Harold was a youth pastor for 38 years and owned a management company to support that ministry. Chaplain Harold’s involvement in public safety dates to the 1980’s where he was involved in the volunteer fire department.

MATT BOXMEYER

Matt Boxmeyer serves as the Search and Rescue Captain. He was born and raised in the Gallatin Valley and has three wonderful children. Matt has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2008. Matt has served in a multitude of roles including Patrol Deputy, School Resource Officer, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Detective Captain, Jail Commander, and Patrol Captain. Matt was also a member of the Special Response Team as a dedicated Marksman.

Brian Taylor serves as the Investigations Captain. He has dedicated his career to public service and law enforcement since joining the Sheriff’s Office in March 2009. Initially starting at the Detention Center, he transitioned to the role of Deputy in February 2016. Over the years, he has taken on multiple roles, including serving as a SAR Coordinator, fulfilling responsibilities as a Coroner, and training new deputies as a Field Training Officer. He promoted to Patrol Captain in June 2023. Beyond his professional life, he has been happily married to his wife, Collette, for 16 years, and together they are raising two teenagers. Balancing a demanding career while being a supportive husband and father, he embodies the values of trust, communication, and teamwork both on and off the job.

JACKIE KERRY

COMMANDER

Jackie Keery Lemon has worked at the Gallatin County Detention Center since 2006. She was promoted to Jail Commander in 2023, prior to this she was the Program & Facilities Director creating a substantial volunteer base to bring life skills programs to inmates to reduce recidivism. She is a graduate of Montana State University with a Master of Public Administration and has over 40 years’ experience working in human services in Bozeman. Jackie is also the chairperson for the Montana Jail Commanders group and understands the importance of facility safety & security through proper practice of the Montana Jail and Correctional Health Care standards.

NATE KAMERMAN

UNDERSHERIFF

Nate Kamerman serves as the Undersheriff where he leads the Operations Command, which includes Patrol, Investigations, Coroner, Search & Rescue, and the Missouri River Drug Task Force. Nate began his law enforcement career in 2011, serving three years with the Rosebud County Sheriff’s Office and two years with the Bozeman Police Department before joining the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office in 2015. Throughout his career at GCSO, he has served as a patrol deputy, sergeant, field training officer, Search and Rescue coordinator, and member of the Special Response Team. Nate grew up in Gallatin County and is proud to serve the community he calls home. He enjoys hunting, fishing, snow sports, and spending time with his wife and children.

BECKER CUELHO

CHIEF DEPUTY CORONER

Beker Cuelho is the Chief Deputy Coroner for Gallatin County. He began his career as a Detention Officer at the Gallatin County Detention Center in 2017. In 2019, he became a Deputy Coroner, later taking the position of Chief Deputy Coroner in 2022. Beker conducts death investigations and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Coroner’s Office. Beker developed training on basic death investigation for new law enforcement officers at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and instructs a 40-hour basic coroner course for new death investigators.
Beker was born and raised in the Gallatin Valley and enjoys giving back to the community by conducting thorough investigations and providing support for families and friends of loved ones.

KELLY SPRINKLE

Kelly Sprinkle serves as the Patrol Captain with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, where she is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of our community. With 19 years of service in law enforcement, Captain Sprinkle brings a wealth of experience and knowledge and a deep commitment to the safety of our community. She began her career as a Patrol Deputy and has advanced through various roles, including patrol, detectives, sergeant, and captain, while illustrating her expertise in criminal investigations, death investigations, and sexual crimes investigations. A graduate of Montana State University, Captain Sprinkle holds a B.S. in Sociology, with an emphasis in Justice Studies and Cultural Anthropology. She has completed advanced training in Interview and Interrogation, Crisis Intervention, Criminal Interdiction and Forensic Interviewing.

CLINT HARPER

CAPTAIN

Captain Clint Harper currently serves as the Professional Standards Captain. He has been with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office since early 2020. Prior to joining GCSO, Captain Harper was a deputy with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Golden, Colorado and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office in Carthage, Missouri. He has held assignments in Patrol, Investigations, Training, and SWAT. Throughout his career he has held many ranks and positions. In June of 2023, he was promoted to Captain and Tactical Commander of the Gallatin Valley SWAT Team. As of 2026, he oversees the curriculum and training provided at the Gallatin College Law Enforcement Academy.

Captain Harper was born and raised in Willow Springs, Missouri. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration with a minor in Crime Scene Investigation and Associate of Science degree in Law Enforcement from Missouri Southern State University. Outside of work he enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife.

FRANK C. CURTICE

DEPUTY | EOW: 10/10/1919 | Cause: Gunfire

Both Curtice and Pomeroy were shot and killed as they attempted to arrest a man for assaulting his employer. The suspect was shot and killed by members of a posse the next day. Deputy Curtice was 39 years old, had served with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office for four years, and was survived by his wife and three children.

POMEROY VRELLAND

DEPUTY | EOW: 10/10/1919 | Cause: Gunfire

Both Curtice and Pomeroy were shot and killed as they attempted to arrest a man for assaulting his employer. The suspect was shot and killed by members of a posse the next day. Deputy Vrelland was 38 years old at the time.

JAKE ALLEN

SPECIAL DEPUTY | EOW: 1/24/1987 | Cause: Gunfire

Deputy Jack Allen had been deputized by the sheriff to assist him with serving warrants the same day he was killed. Deputy Allen was shot and mortally wounded while assisting the sheriff serve arrest warrants on two youths for larceny. The suspects opened fire from within a barn where they were cornered in neighboring Madison County, striking Deputy Allen in the head.
One of the suspects fled to Nevada where he was apprehended ten months later. He was returned to Madison County, convicted of second degree murder, and sentenced to 81 years in prison. He was pardoned by Governor Edwin L. Norris on February 1, 1910. The other suspect fled to Canada and was never apprehended.

SILAS RALSTON

SHERIFF | EOW: 9/5/1878 | Cause: Gunfire

Sheriff Silas Ralston was shot and killed as he attempted to stop a quarrel between two men at a saloon in Bozeman. He was killed instantly when one of the men drew a revolver and shot him. Sheriff Ralston was 39 years old at the time.
Several witnesses said the suspects revolver discharged accidently. Others said the killing was intentional. All agreed the suspect was very intoxicated. He was charged with manslaughter.

ERIN CLEMENTS

DIRECTOR

Director Clements leads the Youth & Family Outreach Program (YFOP) within the Professional Services Command. She has been tasked with expanding the Sheriff’s Office relationships with community members, children, and families. Director Clements was instrumental in developing the Sheriff’s Office Deputy Wellness and Resiliency Program. Prior to working with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Director Clements worked for the State of Montana DPHHS Child and Family Services Division as a Child Protection Specialist Supervisor for 10 years. Additionally, Clements has worked with youth and adult mental health providers in residential and community settings in Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Director Clements graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2006 with a Bachelor of Criminal Justice and a Master of Social Work in 2008.

JACOB OTTO ALLMENDINGER

DEPUTY | EOW: 10/19/2019 | Cause: Struck by vehicle

Deputy Sheriff Jake Allmendinger was struck and killed by his patrol car on Fairy Lake Road in the Bridger mountain range.
He and another deputy were responding to the area to check on the welfare of a stranded motorist. Their patrol Tahoe started to slide backward on ice as they attempted to drive up an incline while looking for the motorist. Deputy Allmendinger exited the vehicle as it slid but became trapped beneath it.
Deputy Allmendinger was 31 years old at the time and had served as a deputy with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office for two years. He had previously served a dispatcher and a search and rescue volunteer for over eight years. He is survived by his wife, three children, and parents.
